Kolkata, Jan 1 (PTI) The Kolkata Port Trust has extended the deadline to January 11 for submission of bids for two mechanised berths managed by the Haldia Bulk Terminals before their exit from Haldia. A senior official of the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) involved in the re-tendering process told PTI that prospective bidders had sought extention for greater clarification on certain aspects of the contract. "Moreover, December being holiday season overseas, bidders planning to tie up with foreign players sought some more time," the official, who declined to be quoted, said. Therefore, he said, the last date for submission of bids was shifted from December 17 to January 11, which incidentally was the second extension for the tender since December 3. KoPT expects at least three bidders out of nine who participated in the pre-bid meeting. KoPT had sought re-tendering of contract for operation and maintenance of berths no 2 and 8 at Haldia docks after HBT exited alleging a law and order problem. KoPT officials reiterated that the contract would be re-issued on the same terms and scope of work as the original contract singed in 2009 with HBT co-promoted by ABG group and LDA of France. "The scope of work will remain the same for re-tendering of the contract for another seven years as this contract is a fallout of failure of an earlier contract," the official said. At least eight domestic companies and one international company participated in a pre-bid meeting for operation and maintenance of berth no 2 and 8, sources said. The port cannot modify the contract to make it more attractive to the bidders as KoPT intends to claim demurrage from HBT for breach of contract and loss thereof. The successful bidder will be appointed for mechanised cargo handling solutions at both the berths. KoPT would appeal to the appropriate authority to claim the losses from HBT, if any, arising out of re-tendering, acting chairman Manish Jain had said. PTI BSM MD RAH ns DKR
