Nirav Modi is one of India's wealthiest jewelers. With a net worth of $1.2 billion, he is India's 46th richest person.
Born and brought up in Belgium to a diamantaire father and interior designer mother, Modi moved to India in 1990 to learn the ropes of the jewelry business from his uncle. His maternal uncle is Mehul Choksi, chairman of Gitanjali Gems.
In 1999, he decided to start out on his own and set up Firestar Diamond. It was while designing earrings for his friend that Modi got in touch with his creative side. Since then, there has been no stopping him. Slowly, but surely, Nirav Modi has gone on to become a brand name to reckon with.
His company today has over 1300 employees and has operations in USA, Europe, the Middle East and India. Modi is married and has three children.
India's only other billionaire jeweler is T.S. Kalyanaraman of Kalyan Jewellers.
