Dilip Shanghvi is India's richest pharma entrepreneur. His net worth is estimated to be $12.8 billion making him India's fourth wealthiest man. However, his net worth has fallen from last year's $13.9 billion when he was the country's third richest person.
Shanghvi is the founder and managing director of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, India's most valuable drug maker. His company manufactures generic versions of drugs like Johnson & Johnson's cancer drug Doxil and an anti-diabetic dug named Prandin.
What began as a start-up, Sun Pharma today has the largest presence in the US among other Indian drug companies. Shanghvi started Sun as a maker of psychiatric drugs 31 years ago and grew it in part through acquisitions. Today it is one of the fastest-growing and most valuable drug companies in India. In July 2013, he was appointed chairman of Taro Pharmaceuticals.
Shanghvi, who now calls Mumbai home, was educated in Kolkata. His son Aalok who heads international marketing at Sun, cofounded PV Powertech, a maker of solar panels.
