You cannot talk about 'Make in India' unless you open up the air services to India.

Calling aviation 'an important tool' to deliver PM Narendra Modi's 'Make in India" vision, Qatar Airways' group CEO Akbar Al Baker has urged the government to open up India's Airways to foreign airlines.

In a chat with CNBC-TV18's Farah Bookwala Vhora, Al Baker reiterated his interest in purchasing a 49% stake in Indigo Airlines. He said that new airlines such as AirAsia and Vistara will need 5-10 years to deliver to India's potential.

He said: "Unfortunately we are at the mercy of the civil service in India - the aviation ministry to hold bilateral talks with India. We were promised many times, unfulfilled promise by the previous government that they will be talking to Qatar to increase Qatar Airways' market reach in India, which never materialized."

However, he hoped that the new government which was very pro-business, pro-economic development, pro-providing jobs to people that they would consider aviation as one very important tool in delivering this vision that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has for India.

"You cannot talk about Make in India unless you open up the air services to India," he added
