Even as what was being expected as a clear run for the BJP looks like going down to the wire, CNBC-TV18's Menaka Doshi and Anuj Singhal caught up CNBC Awaaz's editor-in-chief Sanjay Pugalia to assess the battle.

The BJP first wanted to form the government. Then it delayed the dissolution of their face. It couldn't decide on who would be their face. It was over-dependent on Brand Modi.

Even as what was being expected as a clear run for the Bhartiya Janata Party for the Delhi state elections has progressively looked like going down to the wire, with many opinion polls split between calling it for the BJP or Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), CNBC-TV18's Menaka Doshi and Anuj Singhal caught up CNBC Awaaz's editor-in-chief Sanjay Pugalia to assess the battle.

A keen observer of Delhi politics, Pugalia said there were several reasons for the BJP reaching its current point where it can lose a battle it was expected to easily win till recently.

"The BJP first wanted to form the government. Then it delayed the dissolution of their face. It couldn't decide on who would be their face. It was over-dependent on Brand Modi and was complacent," he said, adding that even the move to induct Kiran Bedi into the party at the last minute and project her as the chief ministerial candidate was a "bad choice".

"Now it depends on the booth level push. [Getting the organization workers] to get people out to vote [on the voting day]," he said.

The final results could go either way, he said, despite the "overwhelming opinion" being in favour of AAP, he said, and added that the party would project failure as that on the part of Amit Shah while a victory would be attributed to PM Modi.

A loss in Delhi, however, could put the BJP at a psychological disadvantage given that elections in key states such as West Bengal, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are slated in the next couple of years, he said.
